WINTER GREEN MANURE

Vetch (or Tares) and Hungarian Grazing Rye (or Winter Rye) seed. This well documented Winter Green Manure mixture produces the most nitrogen rich biomass, leaf and root matter of any Green Manure crop. Vetch is a nitrogen producing legume and helps build soil fertility. Rye plants quickly develop a large fibrous root system which can draw up to 90% of excess soil nitrogen during establishment thus preventing the leaching of valuable nutrients from otherwise bare or fallow ground during heavy winter rainfall.

This makes the traditional Rye and Vetch combination one of the most valuable Winter Green Manure crops amongst vegetable growers, gardeners and allotment holders.

Evenly sow the seeds before raking them down to a depth of approx 1 inch. Firm the ground afterwards to insure good seed to soil contact. Protect the seedbed and emerging seedlings from pigeon damage.
Once established chop up or strim the crop before or just as the vetch plants begin to flower in the spring and immediately cultivate into the soil surface or remove to a compost bin.

Spring sowings will mature in late summer for mid season cultivations and autumn sowings in the following spring.
